Studies around the world have shown an increase in skin cancers, including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. This is mainly due to sun exposure habits and the gradual ageing of the population in developed countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common cancers and account for the largest number of new cancer diagnoses in Spain each year<\/strong>: according to the Fundaci\u00f3n Piel Sana of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology, the incidence of basal cell carcinoma is 113.05 new cases per 100,000 people<\/strong>. Squamous cell carcinoma is somewhat less common, at approximately 38.16 new cases per 100,000 people, but is still more frequent than any other malignancy. Melanoma is considerably less common, at around 8.82 cases per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most of these cancers require surgical treatment. <\/strong>We sometimes see these tumours in older patients. This can lead to other treatment options being considered which, although effective, are always less effective than surgery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When faced with the possibility of dermatological surgery, patients often ask: does a dermatologist perform this operation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The answer is yes<\/strong>. Why? Because of their greater level of clinical training in skin cancer and comprehensive knowledge of the skin as an organ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not only a matter of training, but also of scientific evidence: studies have shown that surgical management of skin cancer by a dermatologist, rather than another specialist, ensures better clinical, oncological and cosmetic outcomes. Several studies show that clear margins<\/em> (meaning no tumour remains after removal) are achieved in skin tumours operated on by dermatologists more frequently and more reliably <\/strong>than when surgery is performed by other specialists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n \nBassas, P. et al.
