Hidradenitis suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition that seriously affects quality of life. It causes inflamed areas, painful nodules, abscesses and sometimes sinus tracts, mainly in the armpits, groin and anogenital region. These lesions, commonly known in Spanish as “golondrinos”, can be very limiting, both physically and socially.
Although HS is a long-established condition, managing it remains a medical challenge. Various treatments are available, but none provides a completely definitive solution, reflecting the complexity of the disease and the need for an individualised, multidisciplinary approach. Nevertheless, our goal must be to minimise the impact of HS on the patient’s quality of life.
In my clinical practice, I am proud to be one of the pioneers in managing hidradenitis suppurativa with personalised topical medication for each patient. This innovative approach allows us to tailor treatment to the specific needs of each case, achieving more effective results and significantly improving quality of life.
I also specialise in invasive, non-surgical techniques that offer less aggressive and highly effective alternatives for managing HS, reducing the physical and emotional impact of traditional procedures. My experience also includes medical management of the condition using retinoids, antibiotics, immunosuppressants and the latest biological medicines. However, some patients do need surgery: I have performed more than 200 procedures as the lead surgeon to treat HS, including fistulectomy, fistulotomy (deroofing) and en bloc excision.
I understand the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications and improve the outlook for this condition.
